Your favorite picture will awaken to a new life as a Lithophane, which will also act as a personal design element. In Lithophanes, the image comes out when a lightsource is behind the image – whether it is natural light or artificial light. You can place the Lithophane on a window sill or hang it in front of a window. The Kuultokuva’s Lithophane lamps are also great design element. The 3D printing technology of the images creates a monochrome tone that brings out deep impression, and creates a harmonious atmosphere to the pictures.
Lithophanes we make are environmentally friendly. We use bio-based and thus biodegradable PLA plastic as well as wind-powered electricity for the production.
When choosing an a photo or image as a Lithophane, consider a few things to get the most out of your Kuultokuva product:
Colors do not repeat in Lithophanes, which can affect the image selection.
Small details may not be reproduced in the Lithophane, as sharply and as impressively as in the original image.
You can order Lithophanes from normal digital photos you’ve taken with your cell phone or SLR camera. On the other hand, you can also send, for example your child’s drawing that you have scanned.
PLA plastic (polylactide) used in Lithophanes is made from lactic acid, which is produced, for example, from glucose and sucrose obtained from maize starch and sugar cane. Lithophanes should not be subjected to heat of more than 60 degrees, which means that only LED lights are only suitable lightsources you can use near a Lithophane image.
Lithophanes are produced by 3D printing, each layer is only 0.2mm thick. Due to the method of production vertical streaks may appear in the Lithophanes, especially in the lighter parts of the images, this is one of the characteristic of this manufacturing technique, and the lines do not affect the durability of the Lithophane.
